CBS Atlanta reports on the best places to dine in South Carolina. According to the article, "South Carolina has restaurants and cafes that span the culinary universe, from the sublime to the superbly over the top." We concur.

Greenville got short changed in that article (literally, they have the shortest write up!). That's just wrong! Italian: GIOVANNI'S-Gabriel personally attends to each table in this cozy place and rattles off a dozen or so "specials" that you may have trouble keeping up with, but you can't go wrong w/ choosing ANYTHING! I visited this place for the first time about 2 weeks after coming back from a trip to Italy....this place made me feel like I was back in Italy again! Also for Italian: on beautiful Main St in beautiful downtown Greenville: Ristorante Bergamo (hey, one our sister cities is Bergamo, Italy) and Giorgio's Ristorante. Also, for less expensive Italian w/ a great atmosphere: The Greenville's original Capri's Italian Restaurant on E. Stone Ave. Established in 1953, this restaurant boasts a great atmosphere (your own personal juke box at booths...w/ OLD music in it) and wonderful, big meals (house wine included w/ entrees!). Pizza: Gourmet Pizza & More on Augusta--WOW! We also have the chains Mellow Mushroom and Barley's (all three of these in the general downtown area). These pizza places have excellent pizza (all different styles). Barley's has some of THE BEST black bean hummus I have ever tried AND, if you're lucky, they still have the homemade cheesecake (or two) of the day still available. Also, in Greenville, you can't forget about the Stax family restaurants! Stax Original (good ol' diner place----great for breakfast!), Stax Omega (still diner type, but a little more up to date than the original...another great place for breakfast or a diner-type lunch), Stax Grill (FABULOUS, good portioned meals from steaks to pork to chicken to seafood...delicious!!!) and last, but not least, the "upper scale" Stax Peppermill (fine dining....excellent food).
ReplyDeleteOkay, I could go on w/ many more...I'm SURE I'm leaving out several unique places (our West End of downtown is beginning to grow and I haven't even visited many of those restaurants that are there!). Let's just say that, in my opinion, Greenville is just as great, if not better, than any other city in SC when it comes to restaurant dining (I'd even put us up against some bigger cities!).
Thanks for the article, Christian.
Concur with both your assessment that G'ville got shortchanged and that it has wonderful places to eat.
ReplyDeleteBack in 2004, I pretty much lived in the Hyatt downtown for 4 weeks during a trial. One of the highlights of that time was dinner at one of the great places on main street. I love Soby's, as well as Ristorante Bergamo. The list goes on and on.
We opened an office last year in Greenville. I'm the first to volunteer to go up there when something needs attending to b/c of the opportunity to have lunch/dinner at some great place.
